Jon's Health Tips: Eating Fish

Eating FishI eat a lot of fish – mostly salmon, but lots of other fish as well. However, I avoid swordfish and tuna, especially tuna steaks and albacore because of high levels of mercury, and tilapia because of high levels of omega-6. I eat fish because its healthy and I like it, and when I’m eating fish I’m not eating meat. Jon's Health Tips: Aspirin

I take aspirin regularly. So does my internist. Here’s why:Aspirin, long known to relieve fevers, aches and pain, has served an increasingly bigger role in health care in recent years. A daily aspirin may help lower the risk of heart attack and clot-related strokes. An estimated 20 million men and women take a low dose of aspirin (81-325 mg daily) to control heart disease. The November issue of Mayo Clinic Women’s HealthSource discusses why millions of Americans opt to take a daily low-dose aspirin and how this therapy seems to work a bit differently for women and men.Aspirin reduces the clumping action of platelets, the blood’s clotting cells. Clotting helps a cut or wound stop bleeding. But clots also form within blood vessels that supply the heart and brain. If the vessels are already narrowed...

Jon's Health Notes: Green Tea

One of my hobbies is collecting information on research involving personal health matters. I’d like to share some of this with you.I try to drink at least 2 strong cups of green tea a day, preferably with a little bit of orange juice. Here’s why:Reader quote: “ Note, though, that green tea is contraindicated with Coumadin, or so my husband's cardiologist says.”Drinking Tea May Offer Health BenefitsTea drinkers who opt for black, oolong, green or white teas may find that these beverages offer health benefits.
